The Beauty of Ivory Carvings

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Morgan Hamilton Ivory carvings are a classic way to show style and taste. These amazing artifacts are famous for their high quality and masterful craftsmanship. Ivory carvings owe their popularity to the smooth surface which makes duplications impossible. Generally they were made out of elephant tusks and the element is tooth. As you know teeth are actually bones. Ivory carvings always have close-grained texture which makes the surface of the product so smooth. Even though the element is undoubtedly very hard, it is yet perfect for carving as it has little resilience which is generally not common for natural materials. Many artists and crafters would do anything to work with this wonderful material but there are only a few who actually have this opportunity. The color of the natural ivory is unique and very popular but there are also some ivory carvings which are bleached or painted. However the majority of people prefer the natural colour of the ivory carvings because of its mellow glow and soft colour. When bleaching or painting an ivory carving, you should be aware that most of its beauty might be taken away. For example, it is as you are painting a mahogany table white. Ivory carvings are mostly considered part of the Far East traditions. Despite that common opinion, it is known that Eastern cultures have also used this element to create wonderful artworks throughout the centuries. This material has been used in Europe for decorating houses and churches, as well. What is best about ivory carvings is that they have a timeless, worldwide appeal. They will never be out of style. The commercial use of this element is for making keys for pianos and organs. Not everyone is aware of this, probably only those who like to “play the ivories”. In the music word the element is a synonym for piano keys. It is really difficult to find many ivory carvings. They have become scarce because the ivory comes from elephant tusks. There have been quite many decades when elephant were killed because of their tusks. Thus the number of elephants has significantly decreased in recent years. Even though the value of the elephant tusks is huge, as it was the main reason for the death of the hundreds of elephants, people had to do something so that these exotic animals would not disappear from the face of the earth. Because of the many animal-conscious individuals and groups in protection of animals there are currently strict regulations for hunting elephants. There should be a way to ensure the creation of marvellous ivory carvings without condemning their ultimate source to death. Energy Healing - Your Body’s First Choice

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Nina Lockwood The human body is full of pulsing, life-giving and life-enhancing energy. Traditional western medicine and even health insurance companies are gradually acknowledging this through the increasing use of complementary and alternative medicine (known as CAM therapies). Energy healing is one of the modalities within the CAM therapies and is known by different names, including: Healing Touch, Therapeutic Touch, Reiki, Energy Medicine, acupuncture, kinesiology. They use different techniques yet have the same objectives. But what are they referring to? And why should it matter to you? There is growing research documenting the health-promoting benefits of energetic healing, including stress relief; increased wound healing and illness recovery; pain reduction and alleviation of side effects associated with anesthesia, radiation treatment and chemotherapy. In fact, touch therapies such as Healing Touch, Reiki and Therapeutic Touch are some of the most widely used energy based therapies being incorporated into hospitals and clinics, especially in the field of oncology. There are even energetic healing techniques that you can choose to receive when facing surgery which can reduce anxiety, stimulate relaxation, stabilize blood pressure, and normalize respiration. In traditional western medicine, various forms of energy produced by the body (heat, electricity, magnetism, light, and sound) are routinely measured by medical devices. They reveal information about how well your body regulates itself and maintains health. Most of us are familiar with equipment such as CAT scans, MRIs, EKGs, EEGs, lasers and x-rays which emit one form of energy while measuring another form of energy. Standard medical treatment is then based, to a large degree, on the findings of these machines, and involves the use of drugs, surgery or other medical devices which involve stimulation of the affected area with pulsed electrical or magnetic fields. Energetic healing takes a different approach. First, the practitioner uses his or her hands to assess your energy system. Then, energy is transmitted directly by the practitioners hands to your body (rather than using machines) to stimulate the healing process. In fact, the frequency of electromagnetic energy which emanates from the practitioners hands has been measured to be comparable to the Pulsed Electromagnetic Frequency Device (PEMFs) used by modern medicine to jump-start healing in bone and soft tissue. Instead of focusing on biological forms of energy, energy healing focuses on the flow of energy through the energetic anatomy of your body. There are energy centers (known as chakras), energy lines (called meridians) and energy fields (the biofield or aura). They form the network through which your body receives, processes and reveals the information with which it functions on all levels physical, mental, emotional - even spiritual. Once an assessment of the energy flow has been made, an energy healing session focuses on removing any blockages and encouraging a return to health.Energetic healing complements traditional medical care. It is safe, non-invasive, drug free and has no side effects. It has the potential to provide you with relief when more conventional approaches come up short. And for those of you who currently enjoy good health, energy healing can help you maintain wellness simply and naturally. Problems in Older Relationships 1- Sexual Anxiety

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Elaine Sihera In time, sex with the same perrson inevitably loses some of its wild excitement, which should be expected and accepted, not taken as a sign of any loss of love. In long-term relationships, the emphasis gradually shifts to familiarity and ease with each other. Intense sexual excitement is then gradually replaced by comfort and security, affection and touching. Many people often get performance anxiety trying to push themselves to achieve multiple climaxes, or the simultaneous orgasms they used to have when they were younger. Then they become disappointed and feel inadequate when it doesnt happen. But worry and anxiety are not a part of enjoyable sex. It becomes a chore then, something to be avoided. Anxieties and distractions are actually intruders during love-making, draining the moment of its passion. Taking them to bed with you squeezes out your spouse and guarantees no enjoyment. Personal questions and concerns about the sex act deserve attention, but at a time and place where a useful answer can be available, not when both parties are trying to enjoy each other. Often anxiety is not caused by the quality of the sex, but by the quality of the actual relationship which reflects itself in the couple’s sex life. Thus if there isn’t openness, honesty or less inhibition, we cannot really be loving and tactile at such intimate moments. Expressiveness is the key to sexual expression and when that’s missing, it is difficult to enjoy the moment. When we are older, sex is often sabotaged by anxieties. When men have trouble getting or keeping an erection, which can cause a lack of interest, there is likely to be a physical health factor or cause. If sex is not enjoyable, perhaps because a climax cannot be reached, the whole process might then be avoided. However, for most of the time, lack of interest from both partners is likely to be caused by psychological factors such as depression, money problems, being disturbed by the children, feeling tense, fear of pregnancy, stress at work, feeling unattractive, fear of intimacy, anger towards or a power struggle with a partner, old beliefs about sex being dirty, traumatic experiences, guilt about extramarital interests, a fear of not being able to perform sexually or, most commonly, feeling tired (Knox 1984; Masters, Johnson & Kolodny 1985). All such anxieties limit the enjoyment of sex, even though good sex certainly increases the level of love and reduces the tension. It seems that couples who have a more equal relationship have the best sexual satisfaction rating because there is less inhibition, less power play and more respect for each other. Overall, if we engage in sexual intercourse with tenderness and enthusiasm, if it occurs in a comfortable setting and if both parties are unconcerned about pregnancy or guilt, it can be one of lifes greatest joys, a cherished memory and a fantastic way to bond with another human being. Nevertheless, we need to bear in mind the many couples who love each other deeply and, for whatever reasons, enjoy each others companionship without having much interest in sex. They tend to be much older, have obviously lost the urge, perhaps have a disability or have been together for quite a long time. Dieting Is Not Easy

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Sarah Anne Dieting is not easy. It is not fun and can be extremely frustrating. Then why are more than 45 percent of women effectively dieting all the time? For me, dieting has always been a phase. One day, Ill wake up and be really motivated to lose weight. Ill proceed to join the latest fad diet bandwagon and workout five times a week. That will last for about a month, maybe two, and then Im back to eating fast food and lying on the sofa watching Oprah. Unfortunately, that seems to be all too similar for other women wanting to be super-model slim. The media pushes an unnatural body type, making it difficult for us to accept our natural beauty. Did you know that the average American woman is 5′4″ tall and weighs 140 pounds, compared to the average American model, who is 5′11″ tall and weighs 117 pounds? No wonder approximately 7 million girls and women are struggling with an eating disorder. Luckily, I have never been one of those women, unless you count feeling the need to completely clean your plate of food as a disorder. When I was growing up, it was instilled in my brain. We never ate until we were full; we would eat until we were completely stuffed and about to pop. Buttered bread? Sure, why not! Dessert? Of course! Fortunately for me, I feel like I have seen the light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to how to diet. Now, Im not a dieting expert, but the truth is, the best way to diet is to NOT diet. Its all about changing your lifestyle. You cant completely cut out carbs, sugar or fat, but you can moderate your intake. Get your sugar from an apple or banana instead of a candy bar, or your carbs from whole grain pasta instead of a croissant. Its all about choosing the right food to eat and sticking to it. Sure, I love the occasional hamburger or chocolate shake, and Ive learned that I shouldnt feel bad for that. If you deprive yourself of the things you love to eat, then one day youll just go crazy and over-indulge in those things. Exercising has to be the most important part of the lifestyle change. Fifty-nine percent of adults do not engage in ANY exercise whatsoever, and only 26 percent of those who do exercise, do it more than three times a week. My main problem with exercise was that I would get bored with what I was doing. Ive learned that you cant stick to one routine every time, and the best thing to do is to mix it up. One day Ill do the elliptical machine; the next Ill take a yoga or Pilates class. Sometimes even throwing something simple into your routine like going for a walk or jog is just what you need to change it up. Its also great having a workout buddy so that you both can motivate each other to get out and stick to your exercise plans. In the end, it all comes down to feeling good about yourself. If you want to know more, a nutritional expert can help you develop a personal action plan for improving your eating habits while keeping the fun in food. Personal trainers can also devise a workout plan that is fit to what you want out of your workout while still keeping it interesting. The most important advice I can give you is to stop thinking about how you should go about loosing weight and get out there and do it! IT - Negotiating Certain Terms in IT Contracts

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Rosanna Cooper In Vogon International Limited v The Serious Fraud Office [2005], a dispute arose in relation to the interpretation of the payment terms in the contract between the parties. The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) hired Vogan International Limited (Vogon) to retrieve email data from computerised tapes used during a criminal investigation. Prior to entering into the agreement, Vogon calculated its estimated fee based upon number of completed backups. When Vogon later submitted its quotation to the SFO, the costs were determined in relation to number of completed Microsoft Exchange databases. Vogon processed 39 backups from the tapes provided by the SFO in relation to two Microsoft Exchange Databases. Vogon sent an invoice to the SFO for 314,375 for the 10 days’ work needed to process the 39 backups. The SFO claimed that the sum due was based upon the number of completed Microsoft Exchange databases, so paid Vogon 22,500. The court ruled in the SFO’s favour as follows:- the word database had no single meaning and so it was necessary to consider the word in its contextual meaning; the question was not what the word database was capable of meaning, but what it meant within the contract; in the context of the quotation and the accompanying cover letter, all references to databases were references to a server; furthermore, Vogon’s construction of database was commercially unlikely, given the difference between the resulting charges; Vogon could not claim a case of mistake or estoppel as this would be contrary to legal principle; and Vogon should pay the SFO’s costs as Vogon’s invoice for such a large sum had been dishonest and opportunistic. Vogon appealed this decision to the Court of Appeal (CA). The CA held that:- the court was correct in its interpretation of the contract and awarding the SFO its costs; however, court was wrong to make a finding against Vogon that it had been dishonest and opportunistic where dishonesty had not been argued by the SFO nor did Vogon have the opportunity to defend itself against such findings. Comment : Parties should seek legal advice at the outset of negotiations. This could avoid excessive legal fees and save valuable time, in the event of a dispute. Do You Know The Top Homemade Remedies to Beat Your Dry Damaged Hair?

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Louise Forrest When people have problems with their hair, they automatically look for shop bought hair care products, conditioners and treatments. However, did you know that there are some homemade remedies which you can easily create, which can often work ten times better than a shop bought one? The reason so many of us do not create homemade remedies is down to a few things. Either we claim we have not got the time, or we think it will be too expensive and too much of a hassle. However, often it takes only a few minutes to create homemade products, and it is usually a lot cheaper too! So if you have never thought about creating your own homemade remedies for your dry, damaged hair, now maybe the time to start! Some of the Best Homemade Remedies for Dry, Damaged Hair There are homemade remedies for all hair types and dry hair is no different. Hair Masks are often the best things for dry, damaged hair as they help to lock in moisture and they also deeply moisturize the hair. Homemade hair Masks Another cause of dry hair could be due to your diet. In order to have healthy skin, hair and nails, you need plenty of good, fatty acids which you can get from foods such as oily fish including salmon and tuna, and flaxseed oil is also good. You can add flaxseed oil to your diet by adding two tablespoons a day to foods such as potatoes or even popcorn! Many people do not like the sound of flaxseed oil but it actually has a nutty, buttery flavor so most people do not actually mind it once they have tried it. Shampoo There are quite a few different homemade hair masks you can create, all with their own unique fragrance, so there should be one to suit you. The most nourishing one has to be the Olive Oil hair mask. The Olive Oil hair mask is created by using 5 tablespoons of olive oil with two eggs. Mix them both together and apply them to the hair, wrapping the hair in a plastic wrap or a shower cap. Allow it to stand for 15 minutes before thoroughly rinsing it off. If you want soft, shiny hair, a good homemade remedy to use is to mix chamomile flowers, comfrey root, elder flowers and nettle, with boiling water. It is best to use one tablespoon of the herbs and enough boiling water, then leave them to stand for half an hour. After it has been left to stand, add 1/4 cup cider vinegar and it them well. Shampoo the hair as normal, and then pour the mixture you have created, over the hair repeatedly. The vinegar in the mixture helps to seal the hair cuticles. You can also create similar remedies for all different hair types; you just have to use different herbs. Remedy For Really Damaged Hair A good homemade remedy for really damaged hair includes mashing a ripe banana with a few drops of almond oil. Apply the mixture to the hair, massaging it in, and then rinse with soda water and shampoo and condition as usual. This adds a little extra protection and helps to seal the hair and prevent any breakage. How to Beat Split, Damaged and Hair Which Falls Out If your dry hair problem is quite severe, you may notice that parts of it are splitting and falling out. Many people find in this situation, Indian Gooseberry really helps. If you rub it into the scalp regularly it can produce excellent results and it really does help to stop the hair from falling out. If you suffer from split hair, a good remedy includes oiling your hair twice a week with coconut oil mixed with fresh lime juice. Overall, there are many different home remedies you can try and most of them do not take long to make. They are natural and so they are gentle on your hair, and your hair will really appreciate the lack of chemicals! California Party Colleges

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Josh Riverside What comes to mind when you think about college? Parties? Night life? Hanging with your friends? Then go to a California party college! Here is some information that will help you find a school that is known for its parties. First, you may want to ask other college students where they go and what the party scene is like. Since many California colleges are known for their parties, you don’t want to go to a school you think ?may? be a party school and then realize that it is actually pretty boring. The students have the best inside information. Also, take college brochure information with a grain of salt. Brochures may talk about how serious a college is about education, and it probably is. But that probably isn’t the kind of information you are most concerned about. In order to find out which California colleges have the best parties, you will need to research other places. In addition to asking students, you can look for information online either in forums, blogs or chat rooms. After you choose the California party colleges that look the best, it is time to submit your application. Ultimately, it is academics, extra-curricular activities and SAT scores that will get you into the school in the first place. Don’t blow off high school because you think you would like to party throughout college. You will run the risk of not getting accepted in the school of your choice. Once you apply, the only thing left to do is wait and see if you get accepted. Apply to a few different schools and not just to your top pick. It is nice to have some choices when it is time to decide on your ideal California party college.
