Perhaps most surprising, is that some of the most powerful sources of inspiration for card making ideas are sitting right under your nose! Let’s revisit some of the more ‘obvious’ sources of inspiration that we can often overlook when we’re stuck for card making ideas. But this time, let’s look at them through fresh eyes… 1. The Occasion There are so many potential occasions for which you can choose to make a card. It doesn’t just stop at birthdays or Christmas. And each occasion or event is loaded with meaning, whatever it may be. So how do you transform the ‘message’ into an eye-catching, meaningful, handmade greeting card design? Exploring the motivation behind the card you’re making, is a good place to start. Is the recipient having a hard time right now and you want to cheer them up? Or perhaps they’re moving house or are starting a new job? Take some time to really think about why you’remaking the card. And how is the occasion or event making the repicient feel? Happy? Sad? Excited? Apprehensive? If you can pinpoint why you’re making a little creation for that special someone, and how they feel about this particular event, it can help immensely in your creative card making process. A cheery card design with vibrant colors would be great to give to someone who’s having a hard time at the moment. A house-shaped card, or even a tapestry-esque, ‘Home Sweet Home’ -inspired card idea could be great for someone who’s moving house or returning from a long journey. Every occasion or event (no matter how obscure) has it’s own visual associations and icons from which you can gather your inspiration. So if you’re stuck for card making ideas, take a few moments to think about why you’re making them the card in the first place, and how that particular occasion is making the recipient feel. That can really help you to translate your message intoa visual representation in your card making designs. 2. The Person Another, perhaps obvious, but often overlooked factor is the recipient. Who are you making the card for? Everyoneis different! And the beauty of making handmade cards is that you really can personalize them. So, make a card that compliments their energy, their ‘aura’, their personality. Are they free and breezy? Traditional and conservative? A bundle of fun? Too cute for words? So energetic they can’t sit still? Focusing on a person’s attributes, likes, and dislikes, can spark off a million of ideas. In which creative direction will YOU go? 3. Quotes It’s always a nice touch to add a quote to a card. But apart from being center-pieces themselves, quotes can also provide you with inspiration for your card making ideas and their color palettes. After all, different quotes evoke different sentiments, emotions, and visual associations. There are different ways to collect quotes. I like to keep a notebook that I use specifically for noting down inspirational, funny and cute quotes. Every time I read a book, magazine, or web page, and see a phrase I like, I note it down (making sure I also note down the author’s name and where I found it). You can grow a great little personal collection of quotes that way. If you have neither the time nor patience for that though, you can buy yourself a book of quotes from your local bookstore, or check out some quote sites online. Either way, quotations are great ways of adding an extra ’something’ to a card and can really play a role in your final card making ideas. 4. Greeting Card Shops An obvious option, you might think, but it’s true! Take a look at what the professional card designers are doing. Many greeting card shops stock both the manufactured and the handmade card varieties. You can get some great card making ideas just by strolling through the isles! 5. Gift Wrap Another great source for card making ideas! There are some simply gorgeous wrapping papers out there. They’re a great way of getting more color scheme ideas too. See what works, see what doesn’t. 6. Crafting Magazines Craft magazines are such fun! For me, it’s always a real pleasure to leisurely flick through a papercraft magazine on the sofa, magazine in one hand and cup of tea in the other! Actually it isn’t a joke - it happened for real in 2004 on the Nushagak river in the Bristol Bay area in Alaska - and in 2005 even more were expected to make the journey! Admittedly no one knows how many were 30-pounders and how many smaller or bigger, but it is not uncommon for King Salmon (as Chinooks are known in Alaska) to weigh in at over 30 pounds. One of the oldest vegetables, the earliest recorded pea was grown in 9750 BC on the Thai-Burma border. Since snow peas are a favorite addition to Asian dishes, this pea might very well have been a snow pea ancestor. In the large family of legumes, the snow pea (pisum sativum macrocarpon) is a flat-podded pea that bears both pods and seeds that are sweet and edible. Snow peas arent particular about soil quality, but they do need good drainage. Plant snow pea seeds about 2-inches apart and one to two inches deep. Snow peas grow best in full sun, but in an area where plants receive some shade from the midday sun as the season progresses. Peas are a cool weather crop. Although snow peas adapt better to higher temperatures than regular peas, for best results you should sow seeds as soon as the soil can be worked. For best germination, keep soil moist yet be careful not to over water, since saturated soil will cause your seed to rot. In fact, the biggest problems you face in growing snow peas are root rot and powdery mildew, both of which begin in soil that is too wet. However, once seeds germinate, plants need to be watered regularly for optimum harvest. Because they are legumes, there is no need to fertilize snow peas. In fact, legumes make their own fertilizer and are often grown as cover crops to replace lost nutrients to soil. However, snow peas, like most varieties of peas, are climbers and grow best with the support of a trellis, fencing, or beanpole. When temperatures reach a steady 70 degrees, the rate of growth slows and plants begin to die. Harvest peas when pods are about three inches in length but still flat. By Lisa Barger There’s no doubt that aromatherapy is one of the most popular alternative therapies of the 21st century. The ease with which aromatherapy can be incorporated into everyday life and the availability of affordably-priced essential oils have both contributed to aromatherapy’s recent surge in popularity. But the failure of the aromatherapy community to clearly define what aromatherapy is and isn’t has allowed widespread exploitation of aromatherapy’s reputation as a healing therapy. You need only to take a quick look down the aisles of your local supermarket to see the word “aromatherapy” on products ranging from hair spray to toilet cleaner. The word “aromatherapy” comes from the French word “aromatherapie”, a word coined in the 1920s by a chemist named Ren-Maurice Gattefosse. Gattefosse “discovered” aromatherapy in 1910 after a small explosion in his lab left him with a serious burn on his hand. After plunging his wounded hand into an open vat of lavender oil, Gattefosse was reportedly amazed at the nearly instant relief from pain he experienced. Later, as his wound healed, Gattefosse experienced much less scarring than he expected and attributed his near-mirculous healing to the power of the lavender oil. Gattefosse went on to study various essential oils for their medical potential and eventually wrote a number of books, including his most famous, Aromatherapie, in 1928. It wasn’t until 1977 that the first important aromatherapy book was published in English. Robert Tisserand’s Art of Aromatherapy was one of the first major aromatherapy texts to fully examine the healing potential of essential oils. Tisserand’s book combined the medical, holistic and esoteric practices of aromatherapy and inspired dozens of authors to follow with their own aromatherapy books. In the early 1980s, aromatherapy made its way to America when the door-to-door cosmetics company Avon introduced a small line of aromatherapy bath products. It took a few years for aromatherapy to truly catch on here in the U.S. but once it did, aromatherapy became a financial juggernaut for manufacturers willing to jump onto the botanicals bandwagon. Today, the aromatherapy world is deeply divided between those who believe in the liberal use of scents, whether natural or synthetic, and those who believe in the strict use of only pure botanically-derived essential oils. Clearly, aromatherapy is more complicated than just dropping a couple of drops of lavender oil into your favorite shampoo. But until the aromatherapy community takes a firm stand on exactly what aromatherapy can and cannot do, aromatherapy will never enjoy widespread acceptance in the mainstream scientific community. Unlike other religions, Hinduism does not recognize a single prophet and has multitude of gods and goddesses, mythologically numbering at around 30 millions! Such a figure is given in mythology by people of wisdom who have included all such perceptible forms as things of worship, so that man can see god in them and respect the existence of such all forms (plant, animal, stone, sky, stars, soil, water, rain, fellow human being, etc. While failing to appreciate such deep meaning of the practices and beliefs, few people from within and outside have started criticizing negatively the Hindu way of life as something of superstition and irrelavancy.The same people have done precious little in appreciating the basic tenets, principles, thoughts, etc. of Hinduism while magnifying the seemingly negative and negative things. Also, Indian communists never miss an opportunity to point out that the name ‘Hindu’ or ‘Hinduism’ is not ancient and that the name has been given by Persian invaders. Yes, it might me true, but the way of life, its culture being followed since thousands of years in India, Nepal and in earlier days, in many other countries surrounding India, does not cease to exist, just because it does not have a indigenous name. For example, though coconut and rice are predominantly grown in south of India, they are mandatory for religious purposes in all parts of the country. Lord Srirama or Sri Krishna, though are believed to hail from the northern India, and are worshipped through out all the three nations. The Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists, though follow their own religions are still part of the Hindu way of life in that they worship the Hindu gods and goddesses and even name themselves after the Hindu names. Thus the term Hinduism, irrespective of the time and origin, represents the much older native culture and traditions of ancient India, comprising of India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, etc. Unlike the earlier Islamic invaders, known for violent way of promoting their religion by invading and destroying the local cultures and Christianity which is known for aggressive promotion through missionary activities, Hinduism is never known to have been promoted aggressively or purposively.Hindusim or people of the ancient culture of India have allowed religions like Buddhism to take root in India. In act Buddhism has not been promoted in other countries by Indians who traveled abroad, but it has been taken by those people from other countries who have traveled to India and back to their countries. Another great aspect of Hinduism is that it has promoted spirituality and recommended restraint in becoming overly materialistic. The knowledge gained by learned people, has been used for general good of the public (such as Ayurveda, Yoga etc). I believe, no other religion or religious literature has such copious mix of spiritualism and knowledge related to daily life applications. Even many traditional practices, have a scientific background relevant either to the olden times or even the present day. For example cow dung mixed with water is sprinkled in the front yard daily after sweeping and even the mud floors are applied with a dung paste periodically. Sprinkling dung mixed with water is known to be germicidal. Die hard detractors of Hinduism (read communists of India), should note that the good old traditions cannot be looked with oversight and that Hinduism is not equivalent to casteism alone, which they frequently refer to. Irritability Being irritable is a common reaction of a depressed individual, teen or otherwise. Teens who usually take out on their angers on their family are showing the signs of depression. They can also be sarcastic, critical, or even abusive to the younger ones. 8. Poor school performance If your teenagers tend to be absent from school, or are causing trouble while there, they definitely problematic. Depression may be taking its toll on them, which is why their schoolwork is slowly being affected. The sadder part of this is that the root cause may be misdiagnosed. They are filled with love and trust for the person that they are committing to and believe that there is nothing in the world that could tear them apart. They rarely take the consequences of their actions into consideration. Married people are now in the minority in our country. I find that very sad. One of the most common reasons for divorce is a cheating spouse. Men cheat on their wives and women cheat on their husbands. It seems that the stigma that was once attached to the cheating spouse has diminished and people no longer find it shocking to discover the reason that their neighbors divorced was because of a cheating spouse. Admit it, if you are talking to your best friend and she mentions how her husband has been distant lately and has been putting in long hours at work, one of your first thoughts is that he must be a cheating spouse. And for men, if a buddy mentions that his wife has been spending a lot of time going out with her girlfriends, especially if she has single friends, the first think you think is that she must be a cheating spouse.
